From Kolkata Sundarban National Park is well connected by Basanti Highway. If you drive via Basanti Highway Sundarban is located just 130 Kms far from Kolkata. An alternative Shortest Road to Reach Kolkata to Sundarban is via Baruipur and canning. Sundarban is just 110 km from central Kolkata. It will take only three hours to arrive at Gateway of Sundarban: Jharkhali or Gadkhali.
The Shortcut Road Direction to Sundarban is-
Kolkata Airport or any hotels from Kolkata city or Salt lake area – Garia Main Road – Baruipur Canning Road – Canning bridge over Matla River – Hospital More(crossing) – Right turn towards Basanti / Sonakhali Bazar – Just before Sonakhali Bazar take a left turn towards Basanti Sonakhali bridge over Gomor River – Take the State Highway – from Mother Teresa More (crossing ) turn right and drive 20 km to reach Jhorkhali which is the gateway of Sundarban. From Jharkhali you can cover Dobanki, Sudhanyakhali, Pirkhali, Choragaji, Panchamukhani, Deulbharani, Surjamoni, Bonicamp / Kalosh etc. (or from Mother Teresa More crossing turn left to reach Godhkhali. Jharkhali and Gadkhali are the last motorable points on the way to the Sundarbans from Kolkata.

If you want to minimise the travelling cost, you can cross the Vidyadhari River by a local ferry and after reaching Gosaba Bazar take a Toto or Mechanized Van from Gosaba and you may reach Pakhiralaya easily within 45minutes. From Pakhiralaya if you take a local ferry to reach Dayapur, Satjellia, Mollakhali, Kumirmati etc for your stay.
From Pakhiralaya, Dayapur, Satjelia, or Dulki only you can explore the Sundarban Tiger Reserve
If you are traveling from cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore or from neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, book your air ticket from your city or country to Dum Dum Airport (official name is Kolkata Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Airport or CCU). From the airport, Jharkhali or Gadkhali is just a three-hour journey. On the first day, you can stay in Kolkata or at Heritage Palace near Kolkata, which will help you acclimate to the tour of Mansion to Mangrove. Alternatively, you can move directly towards Sundarban from the airport (CCU).
How to reach Sundarban By Road from Kolkata
The nearest Railway station to Sundarban is the Canning Railway station, located 40 km from Jharkhali (and approximately 30 km from Gadkhali). The distance from Kolkata to Canning is 45 km. So, those who are interested to enjoy the Local Train Journey just come to Sealdah railway station and from the south division you will get the ticket for Canning. But remember Lakhikantapur, Baruipur or Diamondharbor local is not your choice, so for Sundarban visit, you have to take the Sealdah – Canning local.
